Sisters Learning Code: HTML & CSS for Beginners: Build Your Own Website Portfolio

HTML and CSS are the building blocks of all websites, and knowledge of them is a necessity if you are interested in things like web development, creating marketing emails, or even blogging! During this project-based workshop, you will learn to code your very own website portfolio using HTML and CSS in a fun, social, laid-back environment. Whether you are looking to up-skill your career or transition into the field of technology, become a front-end developer, design a personal website, or simply try something new, this class is for you!

Our HTML & CSS for Beginners workshop is designed to be a hands-on experience. During the session, you'll get to try building out a web page with HTML and CSS on your own with the help of our amazing Mentors! In doing so, you will learn the following:

  • Basic techniques and concepts that are translatable to other programming languages

  • How to create a beautiful, rich single page website with images, and a CSS-defined layout

  • What resources are available if you’d like to continue learning at home (and we think you will)

About Philly Tech Sistas

Philly Tech Sistas is an organization aimed at helping women of color gain technical and professional skills in order to work, thrive, and move up in the tech industry throughout Philadelphia. We do this by providing intro to programming workshops and professional development events that build leadership, confidence and community.

Our intent is to increase diversity amongst the tech industry by supporting women of color in STEM fields. As such, our paid workshops and scholarship opportunities are targeted toward people of color who identify as women, non-binary, or gender non-conforming and want to take part in a female-identified environment. In a society where women of color collectively only make up about 8% of the tech industry, it is important to us that we provide safe, fun, social, spaces where women of color can come together, learn from each other and not feel marginalized. If you'd like to learn more about why it's important for underserved groups to have safe spaces you can read this article.
